TAKING THE NEXT STEPS TO CREATE DISTANCE LEARNING
PERIKIN holds a contract on Fort Bliss known as the Fort Bliss Qualified Recycling Program (QRP). The mission of this contract is to increase recycling, divert waste from the landfill and reduce contamination to preserve natural resources for today, tomorrow and the future. This contract consists of a team of five individuals: Terri Smythe, Claudia Delgado, Eamon Donahue, Leo Zarate and Julianne Montano. Each member of the team helps with a variety of efforts to support the overall goal, which is to recycle RIGHT on the installation.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020, our team did not let this prevent their efforts from excelling the program and creating new innovative distant learning initiatives to reach and educate the community on the recycling services that are provided throughout the installation.
RECYCLE HERO PROGRAM
The QRP program has their very own mascot ‘The Recycle Hero’. This was an initiative curated to create the ideal role model of an individual who “recycles right” and educates their peers along the way. In the past, there was only one recycle hero mascot that represented our organization. The QRP team decided to rebrand and create four new heroes that could be relatable to the local community such as the soldiers, children and civilians that live and work on the installation.

DISTANCE LEARNING
Traditionally recycling trainings were held in person. Rather than halting trainings, our QRP team took the opportunity to utilize video conferencing services to continue educating the community and catering their trainings based on their target demographic. In the following video the training was catered to teach young students how to recycle.

SOCIAL MEDIA OUTREACH
The QRP team also utilized their social media accounts to create educational videos and postings. This gave our audience the opportunity to learn about the provided recycling services in under a minute, learn about up to date announcements and much more.
